Congratulations, you're pregnant! Finding out you're pregnant is one of those happy but scary moments of your life, especially if this is your first child. The most important thing to do now is to make sure you do all you can to have a healthy pregnancy. Here are four tips to get you started on a safe and healthy nine months.

The first tip is once you find out that you are pregnant you must do is to go see your obstetrician/gynecologist (OBGYN) as soon as possible. They will give you an ultrasound to make sure everything is normal and then find out how long you are in your pregnancy. If there are any complications you want to know as soon as possible. They are there to answers any questions you may have and to give you suggestions as to what to do next to insure you have a healthy pregnancy.

Next is to change your lifestyle. Everything you do from now is for two, eating, drinking and even breathing. Everything you do or don't do in the next nine months can have an affect on your child's growth in your womb, future growth and the pregnancy. That means no smoking or drinking any more for you or your baby. When you smoke it also affects your baby. Good reason to quit.

It is proven cigarette smoking can lead to complications like low birth weight in babies and even miscarriages and tubal pregnancies. So also try to avoid second hand smoke whenever you can. And the same goes for alcohol, which can cause complications in the pregnancy and also increases the risk for your child to become addicted to alcohol later in life.

Next is to watch what you eat and drink and how much you eat and drink as it also determines if you have a healthy pregnancy or not. Drinking lots of water, between 6 to 8 glasses a day, is important. You don't want to become dehydrated which can lead to fatigue and other complications. Being overweight or underweight during pregnancy is not healthy, but please do not diet during your pregnancy, now is not the time for dieting. Instead, watch what you eat and doing little light exercises like yoga, walking or swimming is actually good as it will help your weight while keeping you healthy and fit at the same time.

Skipping meals is not good because you and your baby needs as much nutrition and calories as possible, but watch the fat. Make sure you eat balanced healthy meals everyday. You might get the cravings for junk food every so often, but don't get carried away as it has the potential to cause complications in the pregnancy like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases now or later in yours and your child's life.

And don't neglect getting enough rest daily. Getting plenty of rest is essential to a healthy pregnancy. Getting plenty of sleep helps you and your baby get the rest you need to make sure your immune system is as strong as possible. When resting rest on your side to help reduce the swelling and to allow the best blood circulation to your baby.

These four tips are just a few things that you can start do now to make certain that you have a healthy pregnancy and have a happy and fit child. Talk to your obstetrician/gynecologist (OBGYN) and see what else they recommend as you move along in your pregnancy. Here's to your healthy pregnancy!
